The 2026 BYD Shark marks the Chinese automaker’s ambitious leap into the mid-size pickup segment. Designed to rival stalwarts like the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger, the BYD Shark is a plug-in hybrid truck that blends robust performance, cutting-edge technology, and global market appeal.
At the heart of the BYD Shark is a sophisticated plug-in hybrid powertrain. The system combines a 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine, which functions primarily as a generator, with two electric motors one on each axle. The front motor generates 170 kW (228 hp) and 310 Nm of torque, while the rear delivers 150 kW (201 hp) and 340 Nm. Together, they provide a potent 320 kW (430 hp) output, allowing the Shark to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds.
This hybrid setup offers an electric-only range of 100 kilometers, while the total range with the petrol generator extends to an impressive 840 kilometers. Fuel efficiency is rated at 7.5 liters per 100 kilometers, striking a balance between performance and economy.
The BYD Shark is built to handle demanding conditions, with dimensions measuring 5,457 mm long, 1,971 mm wide, and 1,925 mm high. A 3,260 mm wheelbase ensures a stable ride, while its payload capacity of 835 kg and towing capacity of 2,500 kg make it a capable workhorse.
Underpinning the truck is a double wishbone independent suspension system on both axles, enhancing both on-road comfort and off-road capability.
Inside, the BYD Shark is loaded with high-end technology. Drivers are greeted with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen infotainment system, and a 12-inch head-up display. The system supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ensuring seamless connectivity.
Passenger comfort is not overlooked. The rear seats recline up to 27 degrees for enhanced relaxation, while a premium 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system adds an upscale audio experience.
Safety is another priority for BYD. The Shark includes seven SRS airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, and a high-strength steel frame. Advanced driver assistance features such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking come standard, offering peace of mind on and off the road.
Initially launched in Mexico and Australia, BYD plans to expand the Sharkโs availability to additional global markets. With its unique blend of efficiency, power, and tech-savvy features, the 2026 BYD Shark is poised to challenge traditional players in the competitive mid-size pickup arena.
