The Toyota Tacoma Tacozilla is a custom-built camper that debuted at the 2021 SEMA Show, blending modern off-road capabilities with nostalgic design elements reminiscent of 1970s and 1980s Toyota campers.
Constructed on a Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport pickup chassis, the Tacozilla maintains the Tacoma’s renowned durability and off-road prowess.
Powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine, the Tacozilla delivers 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque, ensuring robust performance both on and off the road.
The camper features a retro-inspired color scheme of yellow, orange, and bronze, paying homage to classic Toyota campers. Its streamlined design allows for easy navigation of trails and clearances, accommodating individuals over six feet tall inside.
Inside, the Tacozilla offers a range of comforts, including marine-style teak flooring, a kitchen equipped with a stove and sink, a full bathroom with a shower, a pop-up Lexan skylight for natural light, and a TV for entertainment.
The vehicle is lifted by two inches for additional ground clearance and rides on bronze 17-inch TRD wheels wrapped with 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires, making it well-suited for off-road adventures.
It includes a separated fuel tank filler to prevent fuel fumes from entering the camper, an auxiliary battery in the engine bay for extra power, and a custom TRD snorkel for enhanced air intake during off-road excursions.
🟢 Off-Road Ready:
Built on the Tacoma Trailhunter platform, it’s capable of tackling rough terrain and remote destinations with ease.
🟢 Retro-Cool Design:
The vintage-inspired exterior gives it a unique, nostalgic look that stands out from traditional RVs.
🟢 Compact Yet Functional:
Despite its smaller size, it offers essential motorhome features like a bed, kitchen, and bathroom.
🟢 Hybrid Powertrain (Expected):
Improved fuel efficiency and torque, especially helpful for long-distance overland travel.
🟢 Self-Sustaining Features:
Solar panels, auxiliary batteries, and possibly water storage make it suitable for off-grid living.
🟢 Toyota Reliability:
Backed by Toyota’s reputation for durability and dependability in rugged environments.
🔴 Limited Space:
Smaller than traditional RVs, which might feel cramped for long stays or families.
🔴 High Price (Expected):
As a specialty vehicle with unique features, it’s likely to come with a premium price tag.
🔴 Limited Production:
Could be a limited-run model, making it hard to find or purchase.
🔴 Not Ideal for Urban Use:
Its size and off-road tuning may make it less convenient for daily driving or tight city streets.
🔴 Towing & Payload Limits:
Even with upgrades, it’s still a midsize truck—so payload and towing are more limited than full-size RVs or trucks.
